Abstract
Prostate cancer (PC) is the second leading cause of cancer death and the third leading cause of cancer death after lung cancer. Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor, but it is also used to prevent prostate cancer and reduce the incidence of prostate cancer. We recently discovered that finasteride reduces the growth of PC. We conducted a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled, double-dummy study to compare the effect of finasteride and placebo on the progression of prostate cancer.
Introduction
We recently found that finasteride reduces the growth of PC. The study was conducted at a high-dose (5 mg daily) treatment protocol. After a 5-year follow-up, we observed that the 5 mg dose of finasteride reduced the progression of the PC. This study also revealed that the treatment protocol was successful. In addition, the treatment protocol had a high-dose (10 mg daily) protocol. The study was approved by the North Carolina State University College of Medicine Research Center.
Methods
This study was conducted between May and June 2004. Patients with a prior history of PC and the presence of high-grade or low-grade cancer in the prostate gland (PSA < 10ng/mL) were enrolled in this study. Patients with an overall survival of greater than 50 years were excluded. We also excluded patients who had a diagnosis of endocrine or metabolic disease. Patients who were taking finasteride, or were taking other medicines used to treat PSA, were included in the study. We excluded patients who were taking finasteride or had been on other hormonal drugs for at least 2 years prior to the study. We excluded patients with a history of prostate cancer or those who were using a alpha-blocker. We excluded patients who had a history of prostate cancer, endocrine disease, or other disease, as well as patients who were receiving a hormonal agent for 5 years prior to the study.
Results
There were 10 patients with a baseline PSA < 10ng/mL who received finasteride or placebo. A total of 7 patients with a baseline PSA < 10ng/mL were enrolled in the study, and 4 patients with a baseline PSA < 10ng/mL who received finasteride or placebo were included in the study. Two patients with a baseline PSA < 10ng/mL who received finasteride or placebo were included in the study. One of the patients with a baseline PSA < 10ng/mL who received finasteride or placebo was also enrolled in the study. The patients were enrolled in the study at the time of surgery at North Carolina State University College of Medicine. At the end of the study, all 6 patients who had an overall survival greater than 50 years had PSA < 10ng/mL. There was no significant difference between the 2 groups in the PSA < 10ng/mL at 6 months after surgery. The PSA < 10ng/mL at 6 months post-surgery was 2.8 and 3.3 at 6 months after surgery, respectively.
